At Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park, our park staff is constantly taking steps to ensure visitor safety when visiting the park. While we continue to develop the park including features such as accessibility in the coming years, we continue to make improvements to our safety plans to enhance visitor experience. To plan for a safe and enjoyable experience, we have highlighted important tips before visiting the park:

General Safety

  • Watch your step when exploring the park. Some areas of the park including the lawns surrounding the historic homes and some of the paths available have uneven terrain. There are no sidewalks from Downtown Ste. Genevieve to the Bauvais-Amoureux House, and some sidewalks in Downtown Ste. Genevieve can be uneven or narrow. See our directions page for more information about getting around the site.

  • Dress for the weather. Summers in Ste. Genevieve are often hot and humid, with winters being rather cold. The Bauvais-Amoureux House is not conditioned, while Green Tree Tavern is only partially conditioned. Drink plenty of fluids during hot summer weather.

  • Do not climb on trees, fences, or lean against the porch railings on the historic structures.

  • This is a native habitat for bees, chiggers, wasps, snakes, poison ivy and poison oak. Avoid interaction with these as much as possible by not swatting at flying insects and staying on walkways. Also refrain from feeding wildlife like squirrels and birds that live in the park.

  • Since much of your visit is outside, pay attention to the weather and seek shelter immediately in case of lightning or thunderstorms.

  • Always lock your vehicle and stow any valuables out of sight.

Tour Safety

  • Due to the age and building methods used to construct the historic homes, floors, steps, and ceilings inside the home may be uneven. Please watch your step and watch your head.

  • Tours may be canceled due to weather at the discretion of staff.

  • Exterior stairs may become slippery when wet or icy. Please use handrails and caution when entering and exiting the home.
