Noatak National Preserve

Low rolling mountains and clouds reflected in water at Noatak National Preserve.

Noatak National Preserve was established on December 2, 1980, under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), to maintain the environmental integrity of the Noatak River and adjacent uplands within the preserve, to protect habitat for, and populations of, fish and wildlife; to protect archaeological resources; and in a manner consistent with the foregoing, to provide opportunities for scientific research.

Noatak National Preserve lies in Northwestern Alaska, in the Western Brooks Range. It encompasses over 250 miles of the Noatak River watershed. The Preserve is north of the Arctic Circle and approximately 350 miles northwest of Fairbanks and 16 miles northeast of Kotzebue at its closest point.
