Fossil Lifeform Types—Designations Used

• Plant Fossils include members of Plantae—green algae and land plants. (Many forms of algae are included in Other Fossils.)

• Invertebrate Fossils invertebrate animals. (Protists and other mobile forms outside of Animalia are included in Other Fossils.)

• Vertebrate Fossils include members of Chordata. (Conodonts are included in Invertebrate Fossils.)

• Ichnofossils (Trace Fossils) include general sedimentary disturbance (bioturbation), sedimentary structures (stromatolites, etc.), root traces/rhizoliths/root casts, burrows, trails, footprints, eggs, egg cases, coprolites, animal middens, and so on: Broadly speaking, any evidence of an organism's activity and behavior.

• Other Fossils include protists (foraminifera and allies, radiolarians), fungi, acritarchs, and all forms of algae outside of green algae (coccoliths, diatoms, dinoflagellates, seaweed, etc.)
