Located in Puget Sound, the westernmost of the main islands of the San Juan Islands group, San Juan Island National Historical Park honors the idea that individuals and nations can solve their problems peacefully. For it was here in 1859 that the United States and Great Britain nearly went to war over possession of the island—a dispute ignited over a pig. In addition to its colorful history, the 1,000-acre park is known for its beautiful views, saltwater shorelines, serene woodlands, and orca whales. Visitors to the park kayak, hike, bike, and explore it’s intriguing history and picturesque scenery.
