Located just outside of Jacksonville, Florida, Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve protects 46,000 acres of salt marshes, coastal dunes, and hardwood hammocks. The site is named for and helps preserve the history of the 35 Native American chiefdoms that lived in the region and spoke the Timucua language. The preserve also includes a French fort and the Kingsley plantation, which includes 25 cabins that housed enslaved people. In addition to learning about the history of the area, visitors to the preserve can fish the shores, hike the trails, or kayak through the saltwater marshes.
