Researchers used molecular analysis of carnivore scat to assess the validity of traditional ecological knowledge. Previously, carnivore information required the animal to be trapped, sedated and tissue samples taken. The authors developed a technique for scat analysis, as well as verifying that local and indigenous people correctly identified carnivores from their scat 100 percent of the time.
