Maya Davis, a recent recipient of two Network to Freedom service awards -- the Wilbur H. Siebert and Robert G. Stanton Award. Fellow award recipient, Chris Haley, Director of the Legacy of Slavery Program and its founder made Maya Davis one of his first full time hires to work on the project. In her past work at the Banneker-Douglass Museum and current position at Riversdale House Museum in Maryland, Maya has proven herself one of the country's most dedicated and innovative interpreters of this story.

Since its birth by Congressional mandate on July 21, 1998, the National Underground Network to Freedom has grown from a scattershot smattering of recognized sites of UGRR activity into a truly international network of 744 sites, programs, and research facilities. Collectively, this vast network and the researchers behind it have profoundly expanded and transformed our collective understanding of the multi-generational, multi-racial, multi-national efforts to resist the institution of slavery through flight and escape.
To kick off this year of jubilee, the National Park Service and Network to Freedom staff will be hosting a celebratory event/seminar/film festival on Friday, July 21, at one of the crown jewels within the Network to Freedom, the recently opened, 10,000-square-foot Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center on the grounds of Harriet Tubman State Park near Cambridge, MD.

When: July 21st from 1-4pm & 22nd from 10 - 4pm

Where: Harriet Tubman Visitor Center in Cambridge, MD
