Thing to Do
Mahogany Rock Overlook

NPS
Visit the Mahogany Rock Overlook for soaring views of Buck Mountain, Doughton Mountain, and Cheek Mountain among others.
In the fall visitors are treated to the sight of thousands of hawks and diurnal predatory birds as they use the surrounding mountains and hills as navigation aids in their migration. Watch as these birds ride the air currents created by the mountains, known as thermals and updrafts.
Local birders track, count, and watch hawks from August to early November. Species you may encounter include Osprey, American Kestrels, Red-tail, and other broad-winged hawks.
Just below the parking area there is a picnic table and trashcan available for public use.
Mahogany Rock Overlook is located on the right side of the road at milepost 235. The loop drive dips down to a parking loop where a picnic table and trashcan are located. The overlook trees have gotten tall, but the tips of mountains can still be seen in the distance. As visitors loop back towards the Parkway the small green hill to the right is used by birders during the fall. On a clear day birds can be seen using the mountains as habitat and aids in migration.
The overlook is accessible from the paved parking area. The picnic table is located next to the paved road requiring a ten foot or less walk over grass to access. The overlook is not equipped for use by trailers of any size.
