Thing to Do
Watch the Sunrise at Pine Tree Overlook

NPS Photo
There are many places to view a sunrise along the Blue Ridge Parkway, but Pine Tree Overlook stands out as a favorite. The sun rises over the Peaks of Otter, and the morning shadows are cast into the picturesque valley below. Different weather conditions can add to the splendor, creating awe-inspiring sun rays or clouds topping the peaks or settling in the valley. Every day and every season creates a unique experience.
Pine Tree Overlook is located at Milepost 95.2, a 15-minute drive from the Peaks of Otter. This pull-off can safely accommodate up to 8 vehicles. If you cannot park safely, clear of the motor road, Harvey’s Knob Overlook at Milepost 95.3 offers more room for vehicles and is an easy walk across the parkway to the sunrise side.
The sun rises at a different time every day. Plan ahead, check sunrise times, arrive early, and dress for the cool morning air. For added enjoyment, bring along breakfast and your favorite morning beverage.
