Visit Tuggle Gap

NPS
Many roadways in mountainous areas pass through gaps. These areas of lower elevation between the hills usually made travel easier than having to climb over or even circle mountains. Around milepost 165, the Parkway crosses through an area known as Tuggle’s Gap. Not much is known about Mr. Tuggle. It is believed that he was a reverend that came to this area before the Revolutionary War and built his home at the bottom of the mountains.
There is an access point to the parkway here from Route 8. Traveling north will take you into Floyd, traveling south you will go towards Woolwine and Stuart.
If you are interested in primitive camping or hiking the Rock Castle Gorge Trail, head south for about 3.5 miles and turn onto Rte 605. Campground reservations will need to be made in advance or at the Rocky Knob Campground at milepost 176.
Traveling South on the Parkway towards the access point, the road on both sides has a small maintained grassy with trees beyond it. The turn off to Route 8 will be to the left. At the bottom of the ramp turn left for Stuart, and right for Floyd.
