Thing to Do
Take a Stroll Behind Quarters 1

Quarters 1 was built by order of Major James W. Ripley during 1845-1946. The Commandant's/Superintendent's living quarters was built upon a hill overlooking the City of Springfield. The location of the Quarters along with the elaborate rose garden provided the Commandant/Superintendent and his family a place to relax and escape the humming industry of the Armory.
Today, while the rose garden no longer exists, one still has an excellent view of the City of Springfield. The lawn behind Quarters 1 is an excellent place to relax. Sit under the big oak trees and reconnect with nature in this urban center.
To the right of Quarters 1, by the trees and grass, is the Armory's Victory Garden. The Victory Garden was installed in 2024 and grows a selection of vegetables and herbs that would have been raised on the grounds and in yards across the country during both World Wars to supplement civilian rations and boost morale.
The park has a dedicated Ranger who looks after and takes care of the garden. If you have questions about the garden or about Victory Gardens in general, come and ask a Ranger!
