Today, the National Park Service (NPS) released the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument General Management Plan (plan) and the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the associated Environmental Assessment (EA). The purpose of this plan is to articulate a vision and overall management philosophy for the monument that will inform long-term decision-making by current and future managers. In February 2024, the National Park Service released the plan/EA and conducted public meetings to discuss the plan. The FONSI is based on the plan/EA, as well as the comments received from the public, agencies, tribes, and other stakeholders during the public comment period that concluded March 16, 2024. The plan, EA and FONSI are available online at the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment webpage.
This plan addresses resource protection and preservation, education and interpretation, visitor use and facilities, land protection and boundaries, long-term operations and management, and responds to issues identified during a preliminary planning process.
The plan establishes management zones to guide use and activities, and an organizational structure that will reflect the scientific, resource protection, and operational needs of the park. The plan also emphasizes supporting an interdisciplinary staff to showcase the unique paleontological and other resources within the park’s boundary. A hands-on approach to experiencing and protecting rare resources will be emphasized to park visitors through collaboration with conservation partners and by actively field-testing new practices and methods for conserving sensitive resources.
