Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument Continues South Unit Fencing Project
New structure will protect environmental and cultural resources
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – On November 14th, Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument (TUSK) will continue construction on approximately 0.75 miles of new boundary fencing in the park’s South Unit along its border with Bureau of Land Management-administered land and residential developments. The construction is part of the planning process for a new National Park Service (NPS) unit that helps define this urban National Monument's boundary. The project will help deter prohibited activities, such as the use of off-road vehicles and trash dumping and increase public awareness of TUSK, which was officially designated as a National Monument by the NPS in 2014. These added measures will help protect irreplaceable fossil resources, cultural sites and rare and endangered plants and wildlife.Construction will take place largely along the northern side of West Iron Mountain Road and North Torrey Pines Drive. The fence will have a series of horse gates that will allow equestrians to access and exit the Monument, and it will connect with the first constructed segment of fencing north toward Floyd Lamb Park.Equestrians who utilize the horse trails until March 2023 may encounter construction equipment, noise and dust.
