Located on Grant Avenue at Grant Circle, the Massachusetts State Memorial was the first state memorial to be erected in Vicksburg National Military Park and cost $4,500. Theodore "Theo" Alice Ruggles Kitson was the sculptor of this memorial which was dedicated on November 14, 1903.

The 15-ton Massachusetts granite boulder honors the 29th, 25th, and 36th Massachusetts Infantry Regiments which are noted on the bronze plaque along with the state coat of arms.
