The
vista at the highest point of WhiskeytownFalls is closed due to a
rockslide that occurred some time last weekend.
The trail to the waterfall remains open, and visitors are still able to
enjoy the scenic beauty of the falls from its base. The closure is in effect for the stone steps
and railing leading up to the vista.
While the cause of the rockslide has not been determined, it is likely
the result of the combination of rainfall and freezing temperatures occurring
in the park over the past two weeks, which may have fractured the rock
outcropping directly above the vista. Winter
weather over the next few months and snowmelts in the spring may delay repairs
to the railing and the vista platform.
Visitors
are asked to remain below the railing leading to the upper falls, and the
closure has been clearly marked with a barricade and red caution tape. “The safety of our visitors is the most
important consideration in my decision to the close the vista,” stated
Superintendent Jim Milestone. “We will
reopen the vista as soon as it is safe for our employees to work in the affected
area and perform the needed repairs,” concluded Milestone. For further information, please contact the VisitorCenter during the hours of 10:00 a.m.
and 4:00 p.m. at (530) 246-1225.
