Norovirus Safety in Zion

Notice of Gastrointestinal illness outbreak at Zion Lodge

Beginning July 23, 2024, Zion National Park experienced an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at Zion Lodge. Although there has been no confirmation, to be cautious the park, Zion Lodge, and public health experts are treating it as if it is norovirus. The lodge is following CDC guidance for cleaning/sanitizing found here: How to Prevent Norovirus | Norovirus | CDC.

Anyone experiences symptoms of illness should seek appropriate medical care. More information can be found on the CDC norovirus website: https://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/

The park is working with the NPS Public Health Office and safety staff as well as state and local health department partners to address this situation.

Norovirus Prevention:

  • Wash your hands carefully with soap and water, especially after using the toilet, changing a diaper, and before eating, preparing, or handling food.

  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizers may be used in addition to hand washing, but they should not be used as a substitute for washing with soap and water, as they are less effective against norovirus.

  • Watch for early symptoms of norovirus, such as stomach pain and nausea, before the trip.

  • If preparing foods, wash fruits and vegetables well and cook seafood thoroughly.

  • Clean and disinfect surfaces, counters, and utensils regularly.

  • Consider carrying bleach wipes to clean common shared surfaces before touching them, such as toilet seats or doorknobs.
