Dinosaur Quarry and Cub Creek Area


Winter Construction: The official Quarry Visitor Center is closed for a winter construction project from late October 2023 to May 2024. The Quarry Exhibit Hall (where you see the dinosaur fossils) is open and not affected by this project. During the visitor center closure, a temporary building in the parking lot will serve as the Quarry Visitor Center. Rangers will be available there to orient visitors and answer questions. Visitors can also stamp their passport books and shop the Dinosaur Forever gift store.

Roads

Cub Creek Road: Road is open to the Josie Morris Cabin.
Split Mountain Road: Usually open and plowed and sanded but icy conditions may exist.

Campgrounds

Green River Campground: Closed for the season.
Split Mountain Group Campground: Open. First-come, first-served, vault toilets available, no drinking water. $6 per night for groups up to 8 people. Future Reservations through Recreation.gov. You may book a site no more than 6 months in advance.

Trails

Fossil Discovery Trail: Open. Expect snow, ice, mud. Free trail handout available at Quarry Visitor Center and Exhibit Hall.
Sound of Silence Trail: Open. Expect snow, ice, mud. Trail booklet available at trailhead for $1.
Desert Voices Trail: Open.
River Trail: Open. Expect mud. Leashed pets permitted. Pick up and dispose of pet waste.
Lizard Petroglyph Trail: Open.
Box Canyon Trail: Open.
Hog Canyon Trail: Open.


Harpers Corner & Echo Park Areas

Roads

Harpers Corner Road: Open 7 miles to Plug Hat Butte. The rest of Harpers Corner is closed to vehicles. Expect winter driving conditions. All wheel drive vehicles recommended.
Echo Park Road: No vehicle access to the Echo Park Road turnoff from closed Harpers Corner Road. Is not maintained in winter and steep Dugway is impassable when wet, snow and ice covered. Little to no cell phone service in area.
Yampa Bench Road: No vehicle access from the Harpers Corner Road or Echo Park area. Road not maintained in winter and can be impassable when wet. High clearance 4x4 vehicles required. Little to no cell phone service in this area.

Campgrounds

Echo Park Campground: Open though not accessible from the closed section of Harpers Corner Road. The Yampa Bench Road to this campground is not maintained in winter and is not recommended for travel as road is impassable in snowy conditions, even with high clearance 4WD. There is little to no cell phone service in this area.
Vault toilets available, $6 per night for groups up to 8 people, first-come, first-serve. Drinking water is turned off for winter. Pack out your own trash.

Trails

Plug Hat Butte Area Trails: Open. Expect snow, ice.
Ruple Point Trail: Open. Harpers Corner Road closed to trailhead. Expect snow, ice.
Harpers Corner Trail: Open. Harpers Corner Road closed to trailhead. Expect snow, ice.
Bull Canyon Trail (Off Yampa Bench Road - Not Bull Canyon Rim Trail at Plug Hat Butte): Flooding caused severe damage to the trail including complete wash out of trail in lower sections of the canyon. Driving on the Yampa Bench Road to trailhead is not recommended in winter. Road impassable when wet. Little to no cell phone service in area.


Rainbow Park & Island Park Area

Island Park Road: Road not maintained in the winter. Can become impassible with enough precipitation. Some rough sections with ruts.
McKee Springs Petroglyph Trail: Open. Excpect snow, ice, mud.
Rainbow Park Campground: Open, vault toilets available, no drinking water, $6 per night for groups up to 8 people, first-come, first-serve. Access to campground depends on Island Park Road conditions.


Deerlodge Park Area

Deerlodge Road: Open.
Deerlodge Campground: Open, vault toilets available, first-come, first-serve for groups up to 8 people, water is turned off for the season, fee $6 per night. Pack out your own trash. Use caution near river edge due to bank collapse.

Jones Hole Area

Jones Hole Trail: Open. Expect snow, ice, mud.

Gates of Lodore Area

Colorado HWY 318: Open.
Moffat County HWY 34 & 34N: Open.
Gates of Lodore Trail: Open. Expect snow, ice, mud. Trail booklet available at trailhead for $1.
Gates of Lodore Campground: Open, vault toilets available, no water, $6 per night for groups up to 8 people, first-come, first-serve. Pack out your own trash.
