Road Closure Information

It is important to know if the parkway is open before you visit, especially between November and March. Be sure to check the status of the motor road on our Road Status and Closure page.

The maps include information on planned road closures, detour routes, and estimated reopening dates for the Parkway in North Carolina as well as the Highlands and Asheville/Pisgah regions in North Carolina. They also highlight ongoing repair and improvement projects, including recovery efforts from Helene damage, helping you plan your travels around construction zones.

Virginia Paving Project

The project includes pavement reconstruction, drainage repairs, signage and safety measures. Work is expected to be complete by summer 2026.
A signed detour is in place from north to south beginning at milepost 86 and the intersection with VA Route 43, continuing to US Route 460. Access to the Parkway between Milepost 91 and 105.8 is available via 460 and traveling north on the Parkway. Access to the Peaks of Otter developed area will be available via VA Route 43.

North Carolina Great American Outdoors Act Project

This project will be completed in multiple steps with variable closures and detours. Maps will be updated as steps progress. Steps 1A and 1B will be completed simultaneously.
