In general, the Appalachian Trail is open year-round. The northern terminus at Mount Katahdin in Maine is within Baxter State Park, which may be closed in winter months, depending on weather conditions. Particular sections of the Trail, and less-developed roads accessing the Trail, may be closed temporarily for a number of reasons, but otherwise the trail is open.

Weather

It is your responsibility to be prepared for all weather conditions, including extreme and unexpected weather changes year-round. As the trail runs from Georgia to Maine there will be different weather conditions depending on your location. For weather along specific sections of the trail and at specific shelters, please refer to: http://www.atweather.org/

Fees & Passes

While there are no entrance fee or permits required to walk on the Appalachian Trail, there are a few public lands the trail traverses which charge fees or require permits to park or to stay overnight in shelters or campsites. Please refer to our Fees and Passes page for more information.

Appalachian Trail Conservancy 

Learn about the Appalachian National Scenic Trail at one of three visitor centers operated by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, a non-profit organization.

• Damascus Trail Center 209 W. Laurel Ave, Damascus, VA 24236 open daily 10 -5 
• Monson Visitor Center 6 Tenney Hill, Monson, Maine 04464 open Thur - Mon 8 -11 and 1 -5 

Appalachian Trail Conservancy - Harper's Ferry Visitor Center

The National Park Service and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail do not currently have a visitor center. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, a national non-profit organization, operates its own visitor center in Harpers Ferry, WV.

• Tuesday and Wednesday:10:00 AM–4:00 PM
• Thursday-Saturday:9:00 AM–5:00 PM

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy , a not-for-profit partner, operates a visitor center in Harpers Ferry, WV.

Appalachian Trail Conservancy - Damascus Trail Center

The National Park Service and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail do not currently have a visitor center. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, a national non-profit organization, operates its own visitor center in Damascus, VA.

Appalachian Trail Conservancy - Monson Visitor Center

The National Park Service and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail do not currently have a visitor center. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, a national non-profit organization, operates its own visitor center in Monson, ME.
