The National Park Service will conduct environmental and cultural surveys as well as develop an engineering design to remediate two contaminated mine drainage sites at Laurel Branch Spoils in Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.

Why? Contaminated water from the two mine sites, which are associated with abandoned coal mines, are adversely impacting the water quality and the health of aquatic habitats in the Big South Fork River and its tributaries.

What Else? Remediation of these sites will improve wildlife habitat, the health of natural ecosystems, and improve visitor experience at Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.
