Managing Fire and Fuels

Fire cannot exist without oxygen, heat, and fuel. When wildland fire occurs, fuel is the only element that fire managers may have influence over. Fuel is any combustible material such as grass, leaves, plants, shrubs and trees that feed a fire. Proactive and consistent fuels management reduce the risk of wildland fire.

Fire can be utilized to shape the landscape and achieve large-scale resource goals. Conversely, wildland fire can also adversely impact our resources, both natural and cultural. Fire managers view the wise use of fire as an important tool in the effort to reduce these impacts and restore balance to our ecosystems.
