WASHINGTON— The National Park Service (NPS), in partnership with the District of Columbia Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE), is expected to begin a creek restoration project this fall for the Fort Dupont Creek watershed located in and around Fort Dupont Park in southeast Washington, D.C.

This project will restore approximately 18,900 linear feet of Anacostia River tributaries that flow through Fort Dupont Park. The stream restoration will:

  • Reduce streambank erosion.

  • Improve stream habitat.

  • Manage invasive vegetation.

  • Protect existing sanitary and storm water infrastructure.

“Restoring the Fort Dupont Creek watershed will improve the long-term stability of the stream banks throughout Fort Dupont Park,” Tara D. Morrison, Superintendent of National Capital Parks - East said. “Fort Dupont Park, one of Washington’s largest neighborhood parks, is a center of recreational activities for the community and connects visitors with history. The National Park Service looks forward to enhancing the park experience and environment by improving water quality in the park and throughout the Anacostia River watershed.”

Restoration of the streams flowing through Fort Dupont Park is expected to result in minimal traffic, noise and air quality impacts on the neighboring community during implementation.

The NPS completed an Environmental Assessment to evaluate the potential environmental impacts associated with the Fort Dupont Park creek stream and wetland restoration project and signed a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on May 10, 2024. The FONSI describes the rationale for the decision and outlines conservation measures that will be taken to avoid, minimize and mitigate impacts.

The FONSI and other planning documents are available at: ParkPlanning - Fort Dupont Creek Stream and Wetland Restoration Environmental Assessment (nps.gov).
