BARTLETT COVE, ALASKA – The 187-foot passenger vessel Wilderness Discoverer was disabled by a shipboard engine room fire on Monday morning, June 5, while traveling in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.The fire was extinguished and all 51 passengers and 16 crew of this UnCruise Adventures tour were offloaded via shuttle boat to the cruise ship Sapphire Princess. Passengers were then transferred to the Allen Marine tour vessel Baranof Wind for transport to Bartlett Cove and subsequent air transport out of Gustavus. Eleven crew members remained onboard the disabled vessel, which is being towed to Ketchikan.
Vessels from the National Park Service, US Coast Guard, and commercial operators responded to this incident to ensure the safety of passengers, removal of the vessel, and protection of park waters. Glacier Bay National Park is grateful for the support provided by all responding vessels.
No injuries were reported, and the responding Coast Guard helicopter reported no visible sheen from fuel or oil near the drifting vessel on arrival.
