The Citadel | Alcatraz Island
Golden Gate National Recreation Area, San Francisco, CA
The current 1912 cellhouse at Alcatraz was constructed directly over the first level of a Civil War-era US Army citadel. The “dungeon,” as it is now called, is what remains of the original 1859 fort. From servant’s quarters, to storage, to solitary confinement cells, this space was repurposed numerous times throughout the many eras of Alcatraz Island. Below are links to interperative online tools which allow visitors to further explore areas of Alcatraz Island which have recently been the subject of documentation efforts by Heritage Documentation Programs staff.
The final HDP documentation drawing of the Citadel is available for viewing and download.
