NPS Storm Damage StatusOn March 16, 2026, Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site experienced a wind event that caused significant damage to the park. More than 200 trees fell to the ground while an additional 100 partially fell. A small number of trees were damaged in the historic apple orchard. Three historic buildings, a trail bridge, and portions of the west head race (the water supply for the water wheel) were damaged in the wind event. The oxen and chickens on site and most of the historic buildings in the furnace complex remained unharmed.Various projects are being developed for continuing the clean-up and repair needs. In early April members of the National Park Service, Northeast Region, Arborist Incident Response (AIR) Team were on site for over a week removing hazards throughout the park. A section of the Lenape Trail remains closed on the east side of the park. The East Trail Access parking area off of Hopewell Road and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Pavilion also remain closed. Please continue to use caution throughout the site especially when hiking. Check back for more updates are clean up continues. Trail and Area Closures
