Cameron Parish was hit particularly hard when hurricanes Laura and Delta made landfall only six weeks apart in 2020. Embodying the resiliency of the area’s residents, the Cameron Preservation Alliance requested technical assistance from the National Park Service – Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program to:
- Assess Cameron Parish’s nature-based outdoor recreation opportunities.
- Identify potential project partners and stakeholders.
- Engage parish residents.
- Help turn ideas and potential into a vision.
- Provide recommendations and relevant resources.
- Identify potential funding sources.
The cumulative impacts from hurricanes and tropical storms that devastated Cameron Parish over the years have resulted in a decline of community facilities and services, as well as in the parish’s population. This encouraged the NPS-RTCA team to consider an additional focus for the project, one involving the enhancement and restoration of “place attachment” which is defined as the emotional bond between person and place, and is often related to parks, green spaces, and natural areas. The National Park Service team addressed this not only as it pertains to current parish residents, but also to those who have been displaced, as well.
