Physical Address

Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument is a new unit of the National Park Service. No facilities or services are available. However, visitors can get a view of the site from the south end of the HSHS St. John's Hospital Women & Children's Clinic parking lot.

Use the following address in GPS systems:
400 N. 9th St.
Springfield, IL
62702

Though there are no physical traces of the historic neighborhood visible, visitors can stand in the place where a mostly African American neighborhood once stood. Five houses destroyed by rioters during the Springfield 1908 Race Riot rest beneath the surface of the grass strip along the fence. They remain as reminders of the lives, homes, and hopes shattered by the violence.

From Springfield

Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument is located in the central part of town along the north side of Madison Street between 9th and 11th Street. Active train tracks bisect two parcels of land that comprise the site. The best place to view the site is from the parking lot for HSHS St. John's Hospital Women & Children's Clinic. Enter the hospital parking lot from 9th Street (the entrance from Madison Street is currently closed to construction). Park on the south end of the hospital parking lot. View the site through the fence on the east side of the lot.
