Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument is a new national park located in central Springfield, Illinois. No facilities or services are available. The park is currently surrounded by a construction project and visiting is not advised. View the Things to Do page of this website for activities related to the race riot and civil rights history in Springfield.

The site contains the foundations of five houses burned in the 1908 Springfield Race Riot between August 14 and 16, 1908. Only archeological evidence of this neighborhood remains within the boundary of new park.

Because it’s a new park, many programs and materials are not yet available. Over the coming years, the National Park Service will work with the local community and partners to plan for future development and visitor experiences associated with the new park. Interim measures will look at safety and access and explore opportunities to share the history of the site.
