Junior Ranger Day Gets Kids in Parks

Spring is in the air and the country’s 391 National Park Service sites are perfect places to get out and experience the beauty of the season. President Bush has proclaimed April 19 through 27 as National Park Week and encourages everyone to enjoy the natural wonders and inspirational history found in parks across the country.

The theme of this year’s National Park Week is “Kids in Parks.” About 200 parks will commemorate the 2nd annual Junior Ranger Day on April 26 with plenty of fun-filled activities and special events. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will celebrate the 2nd Annual National Junior Ranger Day on Saturday April 26, 2008. This special day will celebrate Junior Rangers and provide the opportunity for children and their families to explore and learn about Whiskeytown while having fun. Programs will focus on wildlife, fire, plants and history. On Saturday April 26, from 11am to 3pm National Park Rangers with help from California State Park Rangers will lead Junior Ranger programs every half hour at the Crystal Creek Falls Trailhead to Crystal Creek Falls. Upon the completion of the program each child will receive a special Junior Ranger Day bag.

“Junior Ranger day is the perfect ending to the celebration Whiskeytown’s Waterfall Week, where visitors are encouraged to hike the falls,” said Superintendent Jim Milestone. “These programs are just one of the many ways that Whiskeytown is encouraging kids and their families to get out into the parks and have fun while appreciating our National Park sites.

Directions to Crystal Creek Falls

Take 299 west and drive about 9 miles west from the Visitor Center. Turn onto Crystal Creek Road and follow for 2 miles until you see the rock quarry area on your left. Turn left into the quarry and follow the dirt road. Park your vehicle at the locked gate and look for the Junior Ranger booth.
