Whiskeytown, CA - To welcome visitors back into recently reopened areas of the park, and to offer Shasta County and North State residents healthy recreation opportunities in the great outdoors, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is delighted to offer a series of ranger-led programs this month. These activities coincide with Spring Break Week (April 9-17) and National Park Week (April 16-24).While programs such as Tower House Fun n Games, The Wintu of Whiskeytown, Junior Rangers, and Junior Firefighters cater to children and families, other programs, such as the five-mile Brandy Creek Trail Hike, cater to hardcore hikers. A diversity of programs are scheduled, from Crystal Creek Falls Night Hikes and a Whiskeytown Night Sky star party, to hikes on the recently reopened Boulder Creek Trail to Boulder Creek Falls. Finally, PULL, or Pick Up Lake Litter events, are also scheduled, where visitors can help make the lake cleaner and greener.
All are welcome to attend these programs. Visitors are reminded that an entrance pass is required to recreate in the park. And finally, children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Whiskeytown's public programs schedule for April 2022 includes the following...
FRIDAY, APRIL 8
• Whiskeytown Falls Geology Hike 1 pm
Explore park geology and hydrology during this 3.5-mile hike on the James K. Carr Trail to Whiskeytown Falls. This is a strenuous hike with 700 feet of elevation gain, the equivalent of climbing 70 flights of stairs. Bring water and wear close-toed shoes. Meet at the James K. Carr Trailhead, located four miles up Crystal Creek Road.
SATURDAY, APRIL 9
• Brandy Creek Trail Hike 9 am
Get your morning exercise groove on during this five mile, round trip hike on the just-reopened Brandy Creek Trail. Learn how the trail was restored and explore the natural history of the stream corridor on this 3.5 hour hike. Please note that the trail climbs 900 feet, or the equivalent of 90 flights of stairs. Bring water, a snack and/or lunch, and wear close-toed shoes. Meet at the Brandy Creek Trailhead, located at Kennedy Memorial Drive and Brandy Creek Beach.
• Junior Firefighters 2 pm
Children and families will head inside the Whiskeytown Fire Station to learn all about the park’s fire management program through interactive activities. Unravel a fire hose, dress up in firefighter gear, and more! Meet at the Whiskeytown Fire Station at Oak Bottom for this 45-minute program.
• Junior Rangers 3 pm
Children and families can learn all about the park and make new friends during this interactive program. Explore the great nature of Whiskeytown through games, crafts, and/or a short hike. At the end of this 45-minute program, children will earn a Junior Ranger badge. Meet at Oak Bottom Amphitheater.
• Crystal Creek Falls Night Hike 8 pm
Come explore the park after dark on this nighttime stroll to Crystal Creek Falls. Learn about Whiskeytown’s nocturnal critters during this hour-long program. Meet at Crystal Creek Falls Trailhead, located about three miles up Crystal Creek Road from Highway 299.
SUNDAY, APRIL 10
• Boulder Creek Falls Hike 9 am
Take a ranger-led hike to the just-reopened Boulder Creek Falls. Learn how this area of the park is regrowing after the Carr Fire.. This two-mile roundtrip hike climbs approximately 150 feet and there is one creek crossing. Meet at the Boulder Creek Falls Trailhead at the top of Mill Creek Road. Mill Creek Road is a narrow, steep, winding, gravel roadway situated near the Judge Francis Carr Powerhouse. Note: there is limited parking at the trailhead.
• Walk in Time 12 pm
Explore Whiskeytown’s signature historic site during this hour-long stroll through Tower House Historic District. Learn how best friends and business partners Charles Camden and Levi Tower utilized the land to their benefit. You’ll also hear the important story of Kate Camden.
• Tower House Fun n Games 1 pm
Children, families, and all are invited to partake in some old timey fun. In the 1800s the Camden family played croquet, sketched the local scene, and panned for gold. Now it’s your turn to participate in these activities during this 1.5 hour program. Meet at the Tower House Historic District parking lot and bring a change of shoes and socks for after you gold pan!
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13
• Brandy Creek Trail Hike 9 am

• The Wintu of Whiskeytown 1 pm Whiskeytown is located in the homeland of the Wintu. How did these indigenous people historically utilize the land and water of this region? Explore the park’s Wintu heritage during this interactive program 1.5-hour program. Meet at the Tower House Historic District parking lot.
THURSDAY, APRIL 14
• BARK in the Park Hike to Boulder Creek Falls 9 am
You and your faithful companion are invited to attend this ranger-led hike to the just-reopened Boulder Creek Falls. Learn how you and your pooch can practice responsible pet stewardship in the national parks on this two-mile hike. At the end, your dog will join the elite pack as an official Whiskeytown B.A.R.K. Ranger. Dogs required to be on leash. Meet at the Boulder Creek Falls Trailhead at the top of Mill Creek Road.
• Junior Rangers 1 pm
Children and families can learn all about the park and make new friends during this interactive program. Explore the great nature of Whiskeytown through games, crafts, and/or a short hike. • PULL: Pick Up Lake Litter 9 am
Help us make Whiskeytown cleaner and greener by participating in this park-wide volunteer event on the first day of National Park Week. Meet at the Oak Bottom Marina parking lot at 9 am to receive materials and then head out to your designated work location. All ages welcome.
• Junior Rangers 1 pm
Children and families can learn all about the park and make new friends during this interactive program. Explore the great nature of Whiskeytown through games, crafts, and/or a short hike. At the end of this 45-minute program, children will earn a Junior Ranger badge. Meet at Oak Bottom Amphitheater.
• Junior Firefighters 2 pm

• National Park System: Plan Your Next Vacation 3 pm
There’s a park ranger at Whiskeytown that has visited hundreds of parks across 49 states. He’s lived in four of these parks and worked in seven of them. What are his favorite parks and why? During this National Park Week program, take an armchair journey around the U.S. National Park System and discover some spectacular parks that you’ve never heard of. If you are already planning a parks adventure, bring questions and get assistance planning your itinerary. This program takes place inside the Whiskeytown Fire Station at Oak Bottom. SUNDAY, APRIL 17
• Davis Gulch Trail Hike 9 am
Take a spring wildflower walk along Davis Gulch Trail. Meet at the Davis Gulch Trailhead at Brandy Creek Beach for this two-mile jaunt, 1.5-hour jaunt.
THURSDAY, APRIL 21
• Storytime at Anderson Library 3:30 pm
Kids and families are invited to head to the Anderson Library for this community program. Whiskeytown park rangers will read children’s books about wildlife and then everyone will participate in an art activity that children can take home.
FRIDAY, APRIL 22
• Whiskeytown Night Sky 8 pm
Join the National Park Service and Shasta Astronomy Club for the first star party of 2022! Look through telescopes and learn about different stars and planets of the April night sky. Children can become Junior Ranger Night Explorers. Meet at the Oak Bottom Marina for this informal program.
