Pictographic Symbols
The NPMap Symbol Library is the National Park Service’s web map icon set. We integrate these icons into our code library, NPMap.js, in order to use them in various web map applications. They are most commonly found on NPS.gov representing points of interest in the Plan Your Visit maps pages for individual parks. They are also available to park staff when building maps with NPMap Builder.
We start with map symbols designed at the NPS design center, Harpers Ferry Center, and adapt them for use on the web. We support two maximum pixel dimensions, 14px and 22px. When designing at such small sizes, every pixel counts. We create our artwork to be as “pixel-perfect” as possible. In other words, we respect the pixel grid to make sure our symbols do not appear “fuzzy” on standard-resolution displays.
We maintain a GitHub repository where you can access all source SVG artwork for download.
