Camp Nelson National Monument is a new national park unit located in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The legacy and history of Camp Nelson is now told primarily through the rural landscape, earthen fortifications, archival and military records, and archeological research.
Camp Nelson National Monument remains one of the best preserved landscapes associated with Civil War-era U.S. Colored Troops recruitment camps and the African-American refugee experience. The national monument speaks to the stories of transformation from enslavement to citizenship and of the extraordinary endurance and courage of the individuals to reshape their own lives and the course of our nation.
