New Park Entrance Sign under Construction

WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Officials from Glacier National Park report that Big Rock Masonry, Inc. of Columbia Falls was selected to construct the masonry portion of a new sign at the West Glacier entrance to the park. The wooden portion of the sign will be built by Glacier employees. Construction started mid-May, with the new entrance sign completed by the end of June. No road closures will be needed to complete this project.

The construction is necessary due to the existing sign’s state of disrepair. The rock work of the new sign will feature native stone, set in a pattern which is compatible with the masonry of the historic Going-to-the-Sun (Sun) Road. The sign’s design will also be reflective of previous entrance signs in West Glacier.

Like those of many other national parks, Glacier’s West Entrance sign is a popular stopping point for visitors, especially those wishing to take photographs. Given the great care being undertaken for the Sun Road’s rehabilitation, the new entrance sign will be an appropriate marker for the Road’s beginning. The west entrance is the gateway to the park for 60 percent of the park’s visitors.

The sign is located adjacent to the Sun Road, within the boundaries of the park, a short distance north of the Middle Fork River Bridge.
