The Kariña, Indigenous peoples of Venezuela, created Tukupu, Indigenous Forest Reserve, after their own community name. It is Venezuela’s first Indigenous forest business. Tukupu is spearheaded by the Kariña women. Its purpose is to protect the forest as well as allow the community to sustainably use the resources based on traditional knowledge. The hope for the future is to engage with local and national business groups and keep Tukupu in the community.
